The 2007 season has not been an easy ride for Dunlop Yamaha Tech 3s Makoto Tamada and his MotoGP rookie team-mate Sylvain Guintoli, but both riders finally had something to cheer about at the conclusion of Saturdays action at the bwin.com Grande Premio de Portugal.

A late charge from Tamada saw him stun his fellow competitors with a hot lap of 136.736s, which was just 0.435s off pole and earned him fourth place on the grid - his first top ten starting position of the season and his best qualifying performance since Japan 2005.

Indeed Dunlop have started to show signs of improved competitiveness at recent Grands Prix and Tamada had run well in free practice on Friday and then again on Saturday morning before his QP success.

Commenting on his days work and the progress Dunlop are making, the Japanese rider said: It was the best qualifying practice of the season. Im really satisfied with the result and the team are also pleased. We still have to choose our race tyres but the selection Dunlop have brought have been good.

The front tyre for qualifying performed very well and Im happy that I was able to go so fast. The bike is also running well, weve only tweaked it slightly. I want to give a big thanks to everyone. Tomorrow I´ll give it my best and I´ll try to follow the leading pack as much as I can.

Meanwhile on the other side of the Tech 3 pit-box Guintoli was also satisfied with his Estoril work, having secured his highest MotoGP qualifying place so far in eighth.

The 25 year-old Frenchman commented: Its my best place on the grid since the start of the season so thats a positive point. We did a very good run this morning on race tyres so thats good for tomorrow as well. I think we could have a good race here.
