Alvaro Bautista (Master Mapfre Aspar) took a superb victory in today's 250cc race at the bwin.com Grande Premio de Portugal, coming from sixth on the grid and twelfth on lap one to cross the line 4.367s ahead of second placed Andrea Dovizioso (Kopron Team Scot) - with Jorge Lorenzo (Fortuna Aprilia) securing the final podium slot.

After Hector Faubel's victory in the 125cc class earlier, the huge Spanish presence in the Estoril stands meant that Bautista's second Grand Prix win since his promotion to the quarter litre class was well received on Europe's Atlantic coast.

Indeed Bautista rode brilliantly to come through the pack and hunt down Dovizioso and Lorenzo after a poor start – making full use of his recently upgraded Aprilia machinery to take the lead on lap 16 and eventually comfortably earn maximum points.

Lorenzo will not be overly concerned to have finished third behind Dovizioso – who moves back into second in the general standings – as the World Champion still has a 51 point advantage in the title race.

Thomas Luthi (Emmi-Caffe Latte Aprilia) and Hector Barbera (Team Toth) were fourth and fifth respectively, while Red Bull KTM's Mika Kallio was unfortunate to have to retire on lap four when in third place due to a mechanical problem.

Bautista's team-mate Alex De Angelis (Master Mapfre Aspar) lost ground in the World Championship meanwhile as he could only finish sixth.
