- For the seventh time this year, three different manufacturers fill the front row of the grid.

- Nicky Hayden starts from pole for the first time since Phillip Island last year.

- Hayden is aiming to take his first victory since Laguna Seca last year.

- This is the first time a Honda starts from the front of the grid since Dani Pedrosa took pole at Jerez back in March.

- Casey Stoner has missed out on pole for the first time since Assen in June.

- Stoner is aiming to become the youngest rider ever to win four consecutive premier-class races.

- Stoner is the only Bridgestone rider on the front two rows of the grid.

- Valentino Rossi is aiming for his first podium since winning at Assen.

- Makoto Tamadas fourth place is the best qualifying result in MotoGP for a Dunlop rider since Garry McCoy was also fourth at Valencia in 2002.

- Tamada finished fifth at Estoril last year his best result of 2006 and went from pole to second in 2004.

- This is one of only two of the current circuits where Pedrosa has not had a podium finish in any class, the other being Misano.

- Colin Edwards starts from his best grid position since also qualifying sixth at the Assen.

- Sylvain Guintolis eighth place is his best ever grid position in MotoGP.

- Dunlop have two riders in the top eight places on the grid for the first time since Brno in 2002, when McCoy was fourth and his team-mate John Hopkins seventh.

- Hopkins starts from tenth on the grid his worst qualifying result so far this year.

- Toni Elias starts two places higher up on the grid than he did last year, when he went on to win the race.
