On a weekend when Finnish 250cc rider Mika Kallio became the father of a baby girl, the Red Bull KTM rider and his team-mate Hiroshi Aoyama were out of luck on the track in Sundays bwin.com Grande Premio de Portugal race.

Kallio, who recently stated his intention to fight seriously for the title next season, started on the front row of the grid and was in third position for the opening four laps before being sidelined when his carburettor overflowed.

The Finns KTM colleague started fifth on the grid and after seeing off a group of riders just behind the leaders he was riding comfortably in fourth position with World Champion Jorge Lorenzo and a possible podium spot in his sights, when he was forced to retire with four laps to go.

A philosophical Aoyama reflected on the race, briefly, before looking ahead to his home Grand Prix this coming weekend in Japan, commenting: ´It was a disappointing day for us with Mika also stopping, but in one week we have another race, and I think we can make up for today´s bad luck with a good result there. Motegi is a very important race for me, because there will be so many of my friends and supporters there.´

Once Sundays action had drawn to a conclusion it emerged that the highly committed Kallio had missed the birth of his daughter in Finland over the weekend in order to participate in Portugal - and that he would briefly return home to visit his family for a couple of days, before flying to Japan for the next round of the World Championship.
