The Pramac d'Antin team have officially released Alex Hofmann from his MotoGP contract following his controversial decision to retire with 17 laps remaining in Sunday's bwin.com Grande Premio de Portugal.

The German rider cited lack of motivation as the reason for his early exit from the Estoril race – as he pulled into the pits when six seconds behind the rest of the pack in last position after an early problem with his Ducati machinery – with his actions incensing team manager Luis d'Antin.

Immediately after the race d'Antin commented: "I think that lack of motivation is not an excuse for us, and therefore the team reserves the right to make a decision on whether or not he (Hofmann) will continue racing with us for the remainder of the season."

The situation was further clarified overnight on Sunday when the Ducati outfit released a statement saying: "Team management of Pramac d'Antin have decided to release Hofmann from his contractual obligations for the remainder of the 2007 MotoGP season. The last four races in the MotoGP World Championship will see a substitute rider in place of Hofmann, who will be named within a few days in a following press release." Hofmann had already received some bad news early on Sunday, when it was announced that Sylvain Guintoli would be joining the d'Antin set-up for the 2008 season, in a one year deal. The 27 year-old German had blamed the Frenchman as being responsible for him missing two races earlier this season after a crash at Laguna Seca.

The outgoing Hofmann was temporarily replaced by Chaz Davies and Ivan Silva during his recuperation from injury, and both riders could be expecting now be expecting a call about their immediate availability. Davies is a serious candidate following a successful two-day test with Ducati last week at Mugello and his impressive display when he stepped in at Laguna at such short notice.

Guintoli's arrival and Hofmann's early departure mean that there is only one space left for d'Antin for the 2008 season, with current rider Alex Barros yet to announce his own plans for the coming season.
