The bwin.com Grande Premio de Portugal proved to be a difficult event for Kawasaki´s Anthony West and Randy de Puniet, after a weekend of mixed results for the team.

Despite some encouraging free practice runs from De Puniet, both riders struggled in qualifying with West starting from 16th on the grid and his French colleague from 18th - meaning the Estoril race was always going to be an uphill battle.

Although West got off to a spectacular start, crossing the line in tenth at the end of lap one and going up to ninth by lap two, he soon lost momentum after losing confidence in the front grip and began to slide back down the field, eventually finishing the race in 12th position.

The result left the Australian to comment: ´I felt really, really good in the first few laps and the bike felt right: everything worked together and made me feel I could pass everyone in front of me. I kept making up places but all of a sudden I had problems with some sliding at the front. There were a number of times I felt uneasy, so I changed my riding style a bit to push the rear some more, but that wasn´t very helpful and caused some spinning. I´ve struggled here all weekend but I´m looking forward to Motegi and I´m sure we can iron out these issues.´

Sunday began well for De Puniet meanwhile, when he finished the morning warm-up session in second place - just 0.225 seconds behind Casey Stoner but a rare mechanical problem took him out of the race on lap 20. It was a huge disappointment for the 26 year-old after he had made his way through the pack to fight for eighth place, after a poor start from the back of the grid.

´I was 11th or 10th when I broke my engine and five laps before it broke it was starting to not work well, so I tried to continue toward the end and it was not possible,´ explained De Puniet. ´Im very, very disappointed about that because we were very fast during all the weekend, we had a few problems during the qualifying practice but this morning I was second in the warm-up, and to not finish is race is difficult.´
