Although this weekends visit to Estoril for the bwin.com Grande Premio de Portugal produced Dunlop Yamaha Tech 3s best qualifying results of the 2007 season things did not go quite according to plan once racing got underway.

After some encouraging efforts on qualifying tyres in free practice, the improved competitiveness of the compounds at his disposal saw Makoto Tamada record Dunlops best qualifying result since 2002 when he secured fourth place on the grid - whilst Sylvain Guintoli managed the best qualifying effort of his rookie MotoGP season in eighth.

Once Sundays round 14 race got underway Tamada rode brilliantly for 24 laps, holding down eighth place, before unfortunately crashing out with less than four laps remaining.

With his home race at Motegi to come next, a rueful Tamada reflected on the incident saying: That was a very tough race but I am extremely unhappy not to finish as I was expecting so much after qualifying on the second row of the grid. The race was going very well and I was looking forward to a top ten finish and with just four laps to go I thought we were going to do it. I didnt do anything different to the previous lap but when I went into the corner I crashed. I cant explain it.

Guintoli was not feeling fully fit over the entire weekend and although he was desperate to cash in on his lofty grid position and achieve a good result on the day his move to Pramac dAntin for 2008 was announced, ultimately it was not be. The Frenchman did complete the race in the point scoring positions but had to settle for 14th and was well off the pace at the end having entered the pits to change a damaged tyre.

He explained: We had a problem with the tyre from the first lap, I had a lot of chattering, it was even more than chattering, so I struggled a little bit. Then three laps before coming in a piece of the tyre went away and I wouldnt have been able to finish the race. I saw there were eight laps remaining, a bit like in Holland. I had to pit and change the tyre, which unfortunately made me lose a lot of time, so its a bad racing weekend for us.
