- Jorge Lorenzo could clinch his second 250cc World Championship title if he wins the race with Andrea Dovizioso failing to finish and Alex de Angelis lower than fifth.

- Shuhei Aoyama starts from pole for the first time in his Grand Prix career. His only podium thus far was at Le Mans last year.

- Andrea Dovizioso has been the first Honda rider home in every one of the twelve races he has finished this year.

- This is the first time that Honda riders have started first and second on the grid for a 250cc race since the final round of 2005 at Valencia.- Hector Barbera starts from the front row for the eighth time this year.

- Mika Kallio has won the 125cc race at Motegi for the last two years.

- Hiroshi Aoyama finished third in the 250 race here in 2004 and has won for the past two seasons - in 2005 on a Honda and last year on a KTM.
