Under perfect riding conditions in Birmingham, Alabama, 102 aspiring riders had the chance to show their skills in the inaugural Red Bull AMA U.S. Rookies Cup selection event last weekend. Split into two groups, the young hopefuls were all given two sessions and over 30 minutes of track time to stake their claim to become part of the American instalment of the youth initiative.

Judging the riders was a star-studded panel headed by former 500cc World Champion Kevin Schwantz and including high profile racing figures such as Peter Clifford, Danny Wlaker and Gustl Auinger. Those to pass the audition were given the chance to return to the Barber Motorsports Park on Monday, where the 44 from America and other countries such as Canada, Bermuda, Argentina, Brazil, Mexico and Columbia were assessed further by the panel.

The more than 300 guests at the track, including the riders and their respective guardians and family members, were entertained by videos of this years Red Bull MotoGP Rookies Cup events and a visit to the track museum in between sessions.

20-25 riders will be selected after a decision is made this week, and those chosen will become the line-up for the 2008 Red Bull AMA U.S. Rookies Cup series, which will race at AMA Superbike events and next years visits stateside for MotoGP at Laguna Seca and Indianapolis, where the top AMA and MotoGP Red Bull Rookies will pit their skills against each other.
