Gadea leads the way in early Aussie rain

Sergio Gadea (Bancaja Aspar) was the fastest man on track this morning in the customary weekend opening 125cc free practice session, as the GMC Australian Grand Prix got underway in wet conditions at Phillip Island.

With the rain falling, the wind blowing and the track slippery enough to make riding tricky for the single cylinder competitors, Gadea got his head down to put in a time of 151.752s, which was 15 seconds off the normal 125 pace at this venue, but good enough to put him 0.350s ahead of second fastest participant Mike di Meglio (Kopron Team Scot).

Simone Corsi (Skilled Racing Team), Michael Ranseder (Ajo Motorsport) and Lukas Pesek (Valsir Seedorf Derbi) all feature in the top five, whilst World Championship leader Gabor Talmacsi (Bancaja Aspar) was sixth fastest despite being one of several riders to crash during the session.

Talmacsis Bancaja Aspar team-mate Hector Faubel, Polaris Worlds Mattia Pasini and Blusens Aprilia rider Stefan Bradl were other notable crashers, and although neither of them are reporting any major injuries none of that trio featured in a top ten completed by Tomoyoshi Koyama (Red Bull KTM), Sandro Cortese (Emmi Caffe Latte Aprilia), Bradley Smith (Repsol Honda) and Robert Muresan (Ajo Motorsport).
