Lorenzo demonstrates authority in first 250cc session

A strong display from 250cc World Champion Jorge Lorenzo (Fortuna Aprilia) in the first quarter litre class free practice session of the GMC Australian Grand Prix weekend saw the Spanish rider lap more than a second ahead of his nearest rival at a wet Phillip Island.

The track at the Australian venue has dried somewhat following earlier rain, and although the majority of the riders were still not running at 100% Lorenzo lapped in 134.715s - to put him at the head of the timesheet in front of Hector Barbera (Team Toth Aprilia) by 1.113s - though the champions pace was over two seconds off the record for this circuit.

Nonetheless, Lorenzo was still 1.533s quicker than third placed Andrea Dovizioso (Kopron Team Scot) and two seconds up on fourth fastest participant Marco Simoncelli (Metis Gilera).

Master - Mapfre Aspar pair Alvaro Bautista (fifth) and Alex de Angelis (seventh) sandwiched Hiroshi Aoyama (Red Bull KTM) on the timesheet, with the top ten completed by Yuki Takahashi (Kopron Team Scot), Julian Simon (Repsol Honda) and Red Bull KTMs Mika Kallio.
