Kopron Team Scots Mike di Meglio was the man at the top of the timesheets in the first session on the second day of action at the GMC Australian Grand Prix, as the 125cc riders lapped Phillip Island in intermittent rain in their second free practice session of the weekend.

The 19 year-old French rider - who was fastest in the Sunday warm-up in Japan in similar conditions three weeks ago and rode brilliantly from 12th on the grid until lap 14, crashing out in second place but returning to the track to eventually take fourth at Motegi again demonstrated his liking for wet conditions.

Such was the effect of the rain the pace in this early outing was around 15 seconds off the record going at the Aussie venue, with Di Meglios time of 150.451s putting him 0.493s ahead of second fastest participant Sandro Cortese (Emmi Caffe Latte Aprilia).

Third placed rider Simone Corsi (Skilled Racing Team) was 1.216s slower than Di Meglio, with Lukas Pesek (Valsir Seedorf Derbi) 1.307s off the pace in fourth.

Michael Ranseder (Ajo Motorsport), Bradley Smith (Repsol Honda), Tomoyoshi Koyama (Red Bull KTM), Stevie Bonsey (Red Bull KTM) and Raffaele de Rosa (Multimedia Racing) all feature in a top ten rounded off by World Championship leader Gabor Talmacsi (Bancaja Aspar).
