Spectacular crash does not faze on-pace Stoner

In the MotoGP Saturday morning free practice session at the GMC Australian Grand Prix home favourite and new World Champion Casey Stoner maintained his Friday form to top the timesheets yet again, despite another crash at his home track – this time more spectacular than his Friday tumble.

On a drying surface after more morning rain at Phillip Island, Ducati Marlboro's Stoner lapped in a time of 1'31.451s, a touch slower than his Friday pace perhaps due to track conditions, but still good enough to keep him 0.237s ahead of the next fastest rider - Frenchman Randy de Puniet (Kawasaki Racing) - in the last run-out before qualifying this afternoon.

Apparently unhurt by another – this time spectacular – crash having already marked the best time of the morning, Stoner will look to secure his sixth pole start of the season when the riders return to the track for qualifying at 1.50pm local time. If the 22 year-old can go on to earn his ninth win of the year this weekend he will join former World Champions Mick Doohan and Wayne Gardner on the list of Australian riders to win their home Grand Prix.

Behind Stoner and De Puniet on the timesheet this morning Repsol Honda's Dani Pedrosa was third quickest, followed by Alex Barros (Pramac d'Antin) and Loris Capirossi (Ducati Marlboro).

Italian five-time former World Champion Valentino Rossi (Fiat Yamaha) was sixth, compatriot Marco Melandri (Honda Gresini) seventh and Rizla Suzuki's John Hopkins eighth, with Kawasaki's Ant West and Rossi's team-mate Colin Edwards completing the top ten.
