Randy Mamola, the former premier class star who still works in the MotoGP paddock as a media correspondent, has paid tribute to his friend Norick Abe, who tragically passed away last week after a road traffic accident in Japan.

As a fellow Yamaha stalwart and a regular years ago at Kenny Roberts' legendary training facility in Barcelona, Mamola has many fond memories of the much respected and sadly missed Japanese rider.

Mamola commented: "It was a very big shock to everybody because Norick is like close family, not only to Yamaha but to this paddock (MotoGP) and the World Superbike paddock. His style and his memory for all of us was very special, and we are obviously very saddened by this."

"To his family and his children we can only wish them the best and we must celebrate at this time, as best we can, our feelings for Abe."
