The 250cc World Champion Jorge Lorenzo has everything in his favour going into the Polini Malaysian Grand Prix, needing only to finish eleventh or above to retain his title.

Following his ninth victory of the season at Phillip Island on Sunday the Fortuna Aprilia rider needs just five more points to become double champion, before his move into MotoGP next season with Yamaha.

The Majorcans achievements this season have already placed him amongst the great names in the 250 class with his 17 wins in the category (he has 21 in total including four in 125cc), putting him on level terms with Fausto Gresini and Bill Ivy in terms of victory numbers at just 20 years of age.

His nine wins in one season also equals the amount achieved in the quarter litre class by Max Biaggi, Valentino Rossi and Marco Melandri. With two races remaining he has a chance of equalling or beating the total of ten wins achieved by Mike Hailwood and Anton Mang, and could therefore equal Daijiro Katos all-time 250 record of 11 victories in a single campaign.

Despite his solitary ride to victory from start to finish in Australia, commencing on pole and remaining unchallenged for the duration of the contest before eventually winning by a 20 second margin, Lorenzo insists he was not thinking about where his championship rivals were positioned in the chasing pack behind him. Had third placed finisher Andrea Dovizioso been sixth or below Lorenzo would already be the 2007 champion.

Lorenzo commented: I didnt want to know where Andrea Dovizioso was, I just wanted to focus on going as quickly as possible and doing my job correctly. The title is now that bit closer and hopefully I can finish it in Malaysia, although Im not thinking too much about that, as I just want to give everything I can like I did at Phillip Island. The team has worked brilliantly and hopefully in a few days I can reward them for the great job they have done all season.

For his part Dovizioso believes there is still a glimmer of hope that the title could yet be his: We knew that it would be hard for us, he revealed, but it was even tougher than we thought. Every point which can be won in the last two races is crucial for us.

The Italian continued: Its important that the championship is still alive and we can keep fighting in the remaining races, which helps to motivate us. I honestly would have felt pretty low going to Malaysia with the title already over. Obviously its going to be very difficult to make up 45 points, but its not over yet and we always have that hope inside us.
