The GMC Australian Grand Prix turned out to be an unlucky affair for Honda Gresini rider Marco Melandri, who managed to cross the line tenth despite a relatively low grid position and a technical problem during Sundays Phillip Island race.

Melandris starting position of 12th equalled his second lowest qualifying result of the season he was also 12th on the grid in San Marino and was 14th in Turkey but early in the race he showed great pace, getting up to seventh by the end of lap one, and running behind Casey Stoner, Nicky Hayden and Valentino Rossi in fourth on laps four to six.

After being overtaken by Dani Pedrosa, Melandri was later back up to fourth following Haydens unfortunate retirement with an engine fault on lap 13, and the Italian stayed there until the 18th lap when a technical problem of his own saw him start to drop back through the pack the 25 year-old eventually holding on for six points in tenth spot.

A rostrum finish had looked like it was potentially on the cards for several laps at a venue where he has enjoyed great success in the past, so Melandri was downbeat after the race.

The Ducati-bound rider is, however, still in contention for fourth place in the World Championship behind Rizla Suzuki pair John Hopkins and Chris Vermeulen in his current position of sixth, with two races remaining.

Reflecting on the Aussie action Melandri commented: We were in good shape to finish on the podium. After a good start from the fourth row I was able to battle virtually for the whole race in the top five. I had a good pace and the bike felt really good. I could have fought for second but unfortunately I had a problem with the rear tyre that we didnt expect and it slowed me a lot.

I tried to finish the race as best as I could. Im disappointed with tenth place because we had the potential for a much better result at a circuit I love and where I have already won in all three classes, as well as lifting the 250 title here.
