The first free practice session of the Polini Malaysian Motorcycle Grand Prix weekend saw World Championship leader Gabor Talmacsi (Bancaja Aspar) take the early 125cc advantage as he lapped 0.621s quicker than his nearest rival at Sepang.

The Hungarian will aim to confirm provisional pole later today, having topped the timesheets here ahead of Aspar team-mates Sergio Gadea and Hector Faubel.

On a relatively dry track after some slight showers overnight, and with the cloudy sky suggesting rain is likely to fall again today, Talmacsi lapped in 217.055s to set the early standard though that pace is roughly four seconds off the record standard for this circuit.

Behind the Aspar trio Lukas Pesek (Valsir Seedorf Derbi) and Sandro Cortese (Emmi Caffe Latte Aprilia) also featured in the fastest five.

Tomoyoshi Koyama (Red Bull KTM), Polaris Worlds Mattia Pasini, Pol Espargaro (Belson Campetella Aprilia), Simone Corsi (Skilled Racing Team) and Nicolas Terol (Valsir Seedorf Derbi) all ended up in the top ten.
