Hiroshi Aoyama took his first pole of the season today in 250cc qualifying at the Polini Malaysian Motorcycle Grand Prix, with his team-mate Mika Kallio securing second place behind him on the grid at Sepang.

The Red Bull KTM pair upstaged World Champion Jorge Lorenzo on the weekend when he looks certain to reclaim his 250cc crown, but the Spaniard will not be overly concerned as he starts in third place, in front of Andrea Dovizioso (Kopron Team Scot) who was fourth fastest in the Malaysian heat.

Aoyama's lap of 2'07.429s was enough to earn him pole, with his Finnish colleague Kallio just 0.032s slower – while Lorenzo achieved a time which was less than two tenths off the Japanese rider's best.

Popular Italian competitor Dovizioso was just 0.054s behind Lorenzo and therefore completes row one, while the second row will comprise three Spaniards and a Swiss rider - namely Alvaro Bautista (Master – Mapfre Aspar), Thomas Lüthi (Emmi Caffe Latte), Hector Barbera (Team Toth Aprilia) and Julian Simon (Repsol Honda).

San Marino's Alex de Angelis (Master – Mapfre Aspar) and Italian former 125cc World Champion Roberto Locatelli (Metis Gilera) are also in the top ten.
