Stoner milestone hunt not over yet in 2007

Although he has the 2007 World Championship in the bag already, and has been the driving force behind Ducatis first team and constructors titles, Casey Stoner still has the chance to further rewrite the record books at the final race of the season.

Although he has the 2007 World Championship in the bag already, and has been the driving force behind Ducatis first team and constructors titles, Casey Stoner still has the chance to further rewrite the record books at the final race of the season.

The Australians points total for the year currently stands at 347, a figure only behind Valentino Rossis 2005 figure of 367 for a single season. An eleventh win of 2007 for the Ducati factory rider would make him the new record holder, whilst second place at Valencia would put him on level terms with his Italian rival.

Stoner can also put himself amongst the greats, once again including Rossi, with a final victory of the year. Whilst his idol Mick Doohans record of twelve wins in a single season, achieved in 1997, will remain unbroken this year, the 22 year-old Australian can join Rossi and Giacomo Agostini in second place.

Doing his bit for Ducati this year, a win for either Stoner or outgoing team-mate Loris Capirossi would see the Italian manufacturer join the list of constructors to have won eleven or more premier class races in a single season. Of the current list of Honda, MV Agusta and Yamaha, only the former have more than twelve victories to their name in a single year.

Ducati completed a memorable one-two last season at Valencia, with substitute rider Troy Bayliss heading the podium ahead of Capirossi.
