Indianapolis preparations well underway

The construction work on the new track layout for the inaugural Red Bull Indianapolis Grand Prix is well underway at Indianapolis Motor Speedway (IMS).

The construction work on the new track layout for the inaugural Red Bull Indianapolis Grand Prix is well underway at Indianapolis Motor Speedway (IMS).

Preparation for next year's historic event commenced in July and IMS officials plan to have all the construction work completed by the opening day of the 92nd Indianapolis 500 car race early in May of next year.

Joie Chitwood, IMS president and chief operating officer, explained: "Our motorcycle (MotoGP) event is September 14th, 2008, and we have a little event called the Indy 500 in May and you really can't work on anything in May. So the goal is to get it done as soon as possible so that we're prepared for May, for the Indy 500 and our other events."

When officials from the FIM (Federation Internationale de Motocyclisme) visited Indianapolis on August 22nd and 23rd they were pleased with the progress of construction. FIM Safety Director Claude Danis, FIM Race Director Paul Butler and Franco Uncini, the 1982 500cc World Champion and MotoGP rider safety representative, walked around the track with IMS engineers and officials to confirm plans.

Danis commented: "The goal of our visit was to finalise the last drawing we are laying out for the race. On the previous visit, we had some ideas, but the (existing) fence and wall were wrong. It was very difficult to be sure our ideas were good. The people at the circuit are now working on this, and they've removed the wall and removed the fencing so now we're sure that the layout will be the final one."

"On our next visit, we'll decide the exact position of the walls, the exits, the curb stones and things like that. More and more coming here I think the race will be very good because we've found a good layout."
