Sitting pretty at the top of the timesheets on day one of the Gran Premio bwin.com de la Comunitat Valenciana was World Champion Casey Stoner (Ducati Marlboro) who lapped fastest in both Friday free practice sessions.

The recently crowned title winner improved his morning time by 0.115s in the second run-out, which was enough to keep ahead of Sylvain Guintoli (Dunlop Yamaha Tech 3) – who again produced a surprisingly quick practice time in the afternoon to come within 0.001s of Stoner's best FP1 effort.

As he was in the earlier run Repsol Honda's Dani Pedrosa was third fastest in the second session, while Ducati-bound Marco Melandri completed his last Friday on Honda Gresini machinery as the fourth quickest rider – 0.351s off Stoner's pace.

In fifth and sixth places respectively were Chris Vermeulen (Rizla Suzuki) and Randy de Puniet (Kawasaki), ahead of Pramac d'Antin's veteran Brazilian Alex Barros.

Completing the top ten were Fiat Yamaha's five-time World Champion Valentino Rossi, Nicky Hayden (Repsol Honda) and John Hopkins (Rizla Suzuki).

After a big crash in FP1 on Friday morning Pramac d'Antin stand-in rider Chaz Davies missed the afternoon session – more details to follow on injury news.
