In making up ten points on team-mate and World Championship leader Gabor Talmacsi to snatch the title at the final race of the season local rider Hector Faubel has a big task on his hands in Valencia, but the 24 year-old made a good start to the weekend by taking provisional pole on Friday afternoon.

The Spaniard clocked a time of 1'39.498s on the last of his 13 efforts to top the timesheet by 0.146s, with his Hungarian colleague Talmacsi in second place. Of course Faubel will be pleased to have ended the day as the fastest 125cc rider but Talmacsi was right on his shoulder and will aim to maintain the pressure over the next 48 hours.

The Bancaja Aspar pair were joined on the provisional front row by the third rider in their team, Sergio Gadea, who was a quarter of a second off the pace, while Simone Corsi (Skilled Racing Team) was fourth quickest.

Mattia Pasini (Polaris World), Sandro Cortese (Emmi Caffe Latte) and Valsir Seedorf Derbi colleagues Lukas Pesek and Nico Terol completed the provisional second row.
