The Ricardo Tormo circuits changeable temperatures have thrown up a few problems for last years big stars of the race in Valencia, as they struggle with their settings and tyre choice ahead of the final race of the season. The rider aiming to confirm his runner-up spot in the World Championship, five-time MotoGP World Champion Valentino Rossi, was only able to take eighth position in the combined practice standings, whilst 2006 title winner was just behind him in ninth.

Both riders experienced difficulties with their Michelin tyres, with Rossi in particular noting a lack of grip.

Today was quite difficult and we really hoped to start in a better way here! said the Italian after his disappointing afternoon session. Were pushing at the maximum but at the moment its quite hard to ride the bike how I want to.

The main problem is that we dont have grip and, although some tyres and settings are better than others, were still sliding a lot. Weve tried some very different set-ups today but so far we havent made much progress so were going to have to keep going. Our bike isnt the fastest and I think we can improve the setting more, but the main problem is to find a way to use the tyres so that were in a position to fight. Everyone wants to try to finish the season on a high note so we will look closely at the information we have tonight and try to improve things for tomorrow.

Hayden returns to the scene of his title triumph this weekend, but again experienced some early teething problems. Ever one to put in the hard graft, particularly when it comes to tyre testing, Hayden remains highly motivated to improve his position tomorrow.

Honestly its not the start to the weekend we wanted and wed have liked to have come out of the gate a lot stronger, stated The Kentucky Kid. On the cooler track were having a hard time getting the tyres to work as I would like. However, weve made a bit of progress today and I definitely hope that tomorrow I can do a lot better personally, and that we can also make some changes to get the bike to work the tyres more effectively.

We dont seem to have the grip that I need at the moment so well see what other options Michelin has available and work on the settings too. Theres still a long way to go this weekend and the two hours of practice tomorrow will be crucial. Qualifying is going to be really important too so well be looking to come out a lot stronger tomorrow.

The 2006 World Champion is riding his last race with the number one plate at Valencia, and has commemorated the occasion by printing the phrase Last Call on the back of his leathers.
