Injured Rossi to decide on participation on Sunday

Five-time former MotoGP World Champion Valentino Rossi could miss Sunday's final race of the season at the Gran Premio bwin.com de la Comunitat Valenciana following a crash early in qualifying on Saturday afternoon.

The 28 year-old Italian, who has never previously missed a race since his 125cc debut in 1996, has three suspected right hand/arm fractures - fifth metacarpal (little finger), pyramidal and ulnar styloid (wrist).

Depending on the results of further medical assessment and his reaction overnight, Rossi could miss the last race of the year, in which he had hoped to gain the solitary point required to guarantee second place in the World Championship.

The qualifying time he achieved before the accident would see him start 17th on the grid if he is able to participate, with Dani Pedrosa on pole and looking to win the race to make up the 24 point gap between the pair and snatch second from Rossi in the general standings.

Rossi explained: "After the crash I immediately realised that my hand was broken but I didn't know how bad it was. I hit my lower back quite hard as well and actually it hurts quite a lot, but luckily there is no bad damage there. Tomorrow morning I will see how I am and then I will take a decision after further consideration with Claudio (Dr Claudio Costa of Clinica Mobile) and also with the Spanish doctors."

"I have never missed a race in my career and I really don't want to do it tomorrow. I remember last year in Assen the pain was more or less the same, but then I was challenging for the championship. Tomorrow I am challenging for second place; it's not quite the same but anyway of course I will would like to be there."
