Stoner shows the way on first day of Valencia testing

In Tuesday's first day of 2008 pre-season tests MotoGP World Champion Casey Stoner (Ducati Marlboro) shaved 0.4s off Dani Pedrosa's Valencia circuit best lap, set by the Catalan rider on Sunday, as the Australian once again demonstrated his unwavering ability onboard the Ducati Desmosedici.

Stoner posted a lap time of 1'32.348s - to put him 0.828s ahead of second quickest participant Nicky Hayden, as the only rider to go round in under 1'33. Hayden and his Repsol Honda colleague Pedrosa – who was fifth fastest – both looked comfortable on the updated 800cc from HRC.

Rizla Suzuki's Chris Vermeulen was third and his new team-mate Loris Capirossi is already lapping quickly onboard his new Suzuki machinery, having finished fourth on the timesheet.

Of the three new arrivals from the 250cc class, Jorge Lorenzo, Alex de Angelis and Andrea Dovizioso, it was double World Champion Lorenzo at the controls of his new Yamaha M1 800cc prototype, who lapped quickest in tenth – less than two seconds slower than Stoner.

Olivier Jacque was testing for Kawasaki while Anthony West took a day off, with fellow test riders Nobu Aoki (Rizla Suzuki) and Vittoriano Guareschi (Ducati Marlboro) also present.

In addition to the injured Valentino Rossi, his 2007 team-mate Colin Edwards and the Yamaha Tech 3 team were also absent as they will begin testing in Sepang later this month. Team Roberts meanwhile were not in attendance as they are yet to confirm their 2008 package.
