Following his first sessions with new team Ducati Marlboro last week at the opening 07-08 winter test in Valencia, Marco Melandri expressed his motivation and optimism for the challenge ahead.

Meeting fans at the Nolan helmets stand at the EICMA Motorshow in Milan, the former 250cc World Champion and MotoGP runner-up said: "I'm feeling good, I'm tired but happy about the choice I've made. In the tests we did in Valencia I tried the new bike and it's got a great frame, engine and tyres. It's a fantastic bike."

The Italian's initial times on the world title winning Ducati Desmosedici GP07 at Valencia were significantly slower than those of his high flying new team-mate and 2007 World Champion Casey Stoner but Melandri is already aware of the tweaks he needs to make and the great opportunity he has for 2008.

He continued: "I've got to sort out the handlebars and pedals a little because I like my bike loaded forward, but they're little details which we'll resolve during the next tests. I'm really motivated because I'm part of an official team and it's new for me to have the producer right behind me. I can feel their support and hopefully we can work well together."

When asked about the early timing of the announcement of his move away from Honda Gresini earlier this season and his relationship with the team he has left behind, Melandri commented: "Yes, it came out in July but I still get on well with Fausto Gresini. I've developed a lot thanks to him. We'll be rivals next year but in private I'll still respect him a lot. If I've done so well, part of it is thanks to him."
