Hopkins cuts times in Sepang to top timesheets

Continuing his rapid adaptation to the Kawasaki Ninja ZX-RR, John Hopkins was the fastest rider on the second day of MotoGP testing in Sepang.

Continuing his rapid adaptation to the Kawasaki Ninja ZX-RR, John Hopkins was the fastest rider on the second day of MotoGP testing in Sepang. The Anglo-American, who yesterday expressed his pleasure with the rapid reactions of his new team in making changes since his opening test in Valencia, was one of the most diligent workers over the course of the day, with his quickest lap a 2'02.200s turn of the Malaysian circuit.

Times were down across the board from yesterday, with an intense heat of 30ºC drying out the early morning rain. Hopkins cut over two seconds from the time clocked at his opening outing with ‘Team Green' on Thursday, and a second from his fastest lap in the 2007 race with Suzuki.

Former team-mate Chris Vermeulen was the second quickest in Sepang, trailing Hopkins by little more than a tenth of a second and working with the 2008 version of the GSV-R800, which was debuted in the Malaysian race by test rider Nobuatsu Aoki. The Australian was in turn followed by LCR Honda's Randy de Puniet, yesterday's fastest rider, and MotoGP rookie Andrea Dovizioso.

Loris Capirossi, riding at his second test with the all-black Suzuki, turned his focus to the new prototype at the end of the day after a few hours getting to grips with the 2007 800cc machine. The veteran was fifth quickest on the timesheet.

Continuing his work with the 2008 Honda RC212V, former World Champion Nicky Hayden undertook 65 laps of the Sepang circuit. ‘The Kentucky Kid' is riding solo this week in Malaysia, with team-mate Dani Pedrosa sitting out the test and leaving the development duties to the winner of the 2006 MotoGP title.

Yamaha riders Colin Edwards, Jorge Lorenzo and James Toseland also had busy days, with the latter first out on track at midday to get to grips with the 2007 M1. The British debutant had been helped with his lines yesterday by Edwards, who along with Lorenzo today got his hands on the 2008 machine with which he will compete for Herve Poncharal's Tech 3 outfit.

Testing in Sepang concludes tomorrow.
