De Puniet to have right thumb injury assessed

The last of three days in Sepang did not go exactly to plan for Honda LCR's new rider Randy de Puniet, with the Frenchman ending the day ninth on the timesheet having injured his right thumb.

The Sepang test saw De Puniet clock the best time on Thursday and the third fastest on Friday, as he made some good early runs with the Honda RC212V. De Puniet focussed on set-up work with his new Ohlins suspension and Michelin tyres on Saturday - and did not use a soft qualifying tyre on the final day.

However, he damaged his right thumb in a mid-afternoon crash at turn seven but returned to the track to complete his test program, notching 60 laps in total on Saturday. His injury will be assessed on Monday, when he returns to Europe.

De Puniet commented: "I crashed in the middle of the day and I don't know why exactly. I tried a lot of things, a lot of settings, different tyres. I don't know why I crashed but I have an injury to my thumb. I don't know if it's broken or not, I will check that this week. But anyway the test was positive and we are going in a good direction."
