After two wet days at the Paul Ricard circuit, 12 young riders left the South of France last week as incorporates in the 2008 edition of the Red Bull MotoGP Rookies Cup.

Riders from as far afield as Australia, Africa and Japan were amongst the successful participants in the selection event, with the selected dozen having been plucked from a field of 43.

Aside from the obvious nerves and the challenge of a circuit unfamiliar to any of the riders, wet and windy conditions further upped the stakes at the legendary Grand Prix circuit. For the African and Antipodean visitors in particular, the weather was a particularly daunting prospect.

The 43 finally had a chance to try out the dry lines as the weather improved on day two, as the riders made the most of their chance to impress the Red Bull MotoGP Rookies Cup panel. At the conclusion of the event, with the lucky 12 chosen for addition to the 2008 grid, director Harald Bartol was glowing in his praise of all involved in the selection event.

"I am sure that we have a group of very talented guys here," asserted Harald Bartol, KTM's race director. "When we add this group to the riders remaining in the Cup from this year I am sure we will have a closer field and even more exciting racing than we had this season. They were extremely difficult conditions for the riders but, as things changed through the weekend and looking back at the early selection events, it was usually the same people who showed their talent."

Gustl Auinger, himself a legendary wet racer and now Rookies Rider Coach, was also impressed with the performances of the youngsters.

"The kids really did a great job," commented Auinger. "It was so cold standing out there watching them I was certainly not wishing that I could be on the bike. If you could choose, you wouldn't go out in such conditions, but they did it and did it with a smile. Of course we had some falls; in these conditions it was bound to happen. I think that we have found some great riders here."
