Rossi romps to rally retention

Five-time MotoGP World Champion Valentino Rossi will begin testing in Jerez this week on a roll, having retained his four wheel title as winner of the 2007 Monza Rally Show event last Sunday.

Accompanied by co-pilot Carlos Cassina, the Fiat Yamaha rider was in the driving seat both literally and metaphorically in the annual ‘circuit rally', taking victory with a total time of 1:10'59.8 without incurring a single penalty. Rossi won three of the seven special stages that make up the competition, along with two second places, a third and a fifth position.

In addition to the main event, the ubiquitous Italian was also one of the standout performers in the ‘Master Show' segment, in which he reached the semi finals at the Autodromo Nazionale di Monza.

Rossi was by far the most successful MotoGP representative at the rally show, as the likes of 250cc duo Marco Simoncelli and Fabrizio Lai, Fiat Yamaha crew team members Roberto and Davide Brivio, Matteo Flamigni and Rossi's personal assistant ‘Uccio' all failed to finish on the first page of the timesheets.

The 28 year-old's winter testing begins in earnest tomorrow at Jerez, where he will be riding on Bridgestone tyres and sharing a garage with MotoGP newcomer Jorge Lorenzo for the first time.
