Stoner in Jerez driving seat on day one

Undertaking the fewest laps of any rider in Jerez, 2007 World Champion Casey Stoner was the fastest man on track on the opening day of the final testing session of the year.

Setting his 1'40.221 lap early on in the day, Stoner was making his debut onboard the Ducati Desmosedici GP8, a development of the bike so successful last season. The Australian undertook 28 laps of the Southern Spanish circuit, although on his postprandial run-out the Ducati factory rider had a notable crash which red flagged the session at 3pm. Stoner thankfully avoided any injury in the incident, which occurred on the same track where he had his last damaging off at the end of last year's official test.

After his recumbence two weeks ago whilst his fellow Honda riders tested in Sepang, Dani Pedrosa was back in the saddle of the new Honda RC212V today. The Spaniard was just over a tenth of a second slower than Stoner, and spent some of the earlier part of the day working with the 2007 bike.

The last confirmed MotoGP rider to make his testing debut, Valentino Rossi was the last rider on track as he left his newly partitioned garage at around midday. The five-time MotoGP World Champion was today undertaking his first laps on Bridgestone tyres, using the 2007 Yamaha M1 to adjust to the switch. He was almost immediately on the pace, although the 1'40.514 lap which put him third in the standings was just under three tenths faster than Michelin-shod Yamaha satellite team rider Colin Edwards.

The top six, including 2006 World Champion Nicky Hayden and Gresini Honda rider Alex de Angelis, were all within a second of Stoner's marker, whilst the rider to put in the most laps of the track was Yamaha rookie Jorge Lorenzo. The reigning 250cc World Champion continued his adaptation to 800cc riding with a marathon 91 lap stint, less than a month after getting on the bike for a first public test.

Testing in Jerez, where today temperatures reached 20°C, continues tomorrow. Reactions from today can be seen on motogp.com.
