New Ducati test rider Niccolo Canepa made his MotoGP test debut at Jerez on Tuesday and will be a busy man next year in his new role, having signed a one-year contract with the Italian factory to share development duties with Vittoriano Guareschi.

New Ducati test rider Niccolo Canepa made his MotoGP test debut at Jerez on Tuesday and will be a busy man next year in his new role, having signed a one-year contract with the Italian factory to share development duties with Vittoriano Guareschi.

As the main replacement rider should there be any injuries to Ducati's four main 2008 MotoGP competitors, 19 year-old Canepa will be will be present at pre-season tests in Sepang and Phillip Island in the new year – and time permitting he will also be involved in Ducati's development programmes in other racing series.

The teenager is also poised for a Grand Prix wild-card appearance in 2008 - to be decided by Ducati Corse - and with an opportunity to experience riding at MotoGP tracks on Desmosedici prototypes the aim is for him to prepare for a possible full campaign in 2009.

Currently in the first year of an engineering degree and praised for his good technical feedback and calm approach to racing and testing, Canepa was the fastest of four test riders at Jerez on day one of the last MotoGP gathering of the year, as he got to grips with an 800cc prototype at the Spanish circuit.

Canepa won the 2007 FIM Superstock 1000cc World Championship with the official Ducati team. He debuted in 2006 with Ducati in the Superstock 600cc class and was leading the series when he broke his leg and had to sit out of the rest of the season.
