Honda Gresini's 2008 MotoGP newcomer Alex de Angelis made good progress in the end of year tests at Valencia and Jerez, covering more than 1100 km on 800cc machinery in preparation for his premier class debut.

When the final test session of 2007 drew to a close at the Jerez de la Frontera circuit in southern Spain last week, after three days of intensive work, the 23 year-old from San Marino was seventh on the timesheet on the final day - with a best effort of 1'40.185s putting him right in amongst the big boys.

If the Valencia test allowed him simply to settle into his new surroundings, familiarising himself with the Bridgestone-shod RC212V, De Angelis began testing in anger at Jerez and put in some impressive laps times.

Throughout the visit he remained close to the top of the timesheet, even lapping fourth fastest overall on day two - with most of the 2008 MotoGP grid in attendance.

Undertaking 138 laps in less than 72 hours at the Andalucian venue, more than five times the length of the 800cc Jerez Grand Prix race distance, De Angelis worked on ironing out chattering issues with his new chief mechanic Fabrizio Cecchini, who has worked closely with Marco Melandri and Toni Elias for the Gresini team in recent years.

Reflecting on his first few weeks as a MotoGP rider, De Angelis commented: "I'm very happy after the last test, as we were able to go through plenty of things. I improved my feeling with the team and the bike, and above anything else, with the tyres, as we had some front chattering problems."

"We did some good work and I was easily able to put in similar lap times to the guys who made it into the top four in last year's race at Jerez. So our work was very positive and I couldn't have expected for more in winter testing."

The Gresini Honda team and new charge De Angelis will regroup after the winter test embargo on January 22nd Sepang, where HRC are expected to provide all their satellite riders with the new 2008 version of the RC212V, as used by Dani Pedrosa and Nicky Hayden in recent weeks.
