The auction for Valentino Rossi's famous ‘Mugello heart' helmet, which took place over the course of five days of intensive bidding, ended with nearly 13,500 euros being raised for the Giannina Gaslini children's hospital in Italy.

More than a hundred bids were placed in the auction, made through ebay.it, with the helmet going for the highest ever amount for an item of its kind.

The unique heart design, used only during the Italian's home triumph at the legendary circuit, was the work of artist Aldo Drudi.

Rossi presented the helmet, which also featured a personal dedication, in person to the winning bidder at an event organised by Dainese in Genoa. It is the latest charitable donation by the five-time MotoGP World Champion to the cause, and the proceeds will this time go towards the construction of a special area for the patients to play, rehabilitate, learn and spend time with their families.
