De Puniet continues on top on second day in Sepang

LCR Honda rider Randy de Puniet's early time, the fastest of the morning, remained unbeaten by either the Frenchman himself or the 19 fellow testers at the Sepang circuit on day two.

LCR Honda rider Randy de Puniet's early time, the fastest of the morning, remained unbeaten by either the Frenchman himself or the 19 fellow testers at the Sepang circuit on day two. De Puniet clocked a 2'01.139 lap of the Malaysian track from 63 laps, one of the riders undertaking the most work on a hot and humid day.

A small crash did little to hinder his progress, and the 26 year-old continued to ride at an extremely fast pace. In fact, the Honda satellite rider's final 20 lap run rhythm of 2'02.553 was over two tenths of a second quicker than that of 2007 World Champion and Sepang race winner Casey Stoner in last October's Grand Prix.

The second day of the 2008 preseason saw the top two in very similar circumstances. De Puniet and Tech 3 satellite team rider Colin Edwards were both without the new engines that respective factories Honda and Yamaha have been developing, and focused their work on new chassis with impressive results. Edwards came within two tenths of the fastest time of the day, ahead of factory team rider and former team-mate Valentino Rossi.

Aside from rookie James Toseland, Edwards' current team-mate and eleventh quickest as he continues to learn the ropes on the Yamaha M1, the Japanese factory's riders made an authoritative stamp on the timesheets. Newcomer Jorge Lorenzo was once again inside the 2'02 barrier in fourth place, the 250cc World Champion ahead of MotoGP counterpart Stoner.

The Ducati Marlboro team did not experience a repeat of yesterday's electrical problems, and Stoner focused his work on tyre testing for Bridgestone. He was fifth quickest ahead of a resurgent John Hopkins, who experienced a slow start to his preseason yesterday onboard the Kawasaki Ninja ZX-RR.

Loris Capirossi, Andrea Dovizioso, Shinya Nakano and Nicky Hayden completed Wednesday's top ten. All three went round quicker than on their opening day of testing, with Hayden once again the rider with the most laps under his belt. The 2006 MotoGP World Champion undertook a slightly expanded schedule due to the absence of Repsol Honda team-mate Dani Pedrosa, who returned to Barcelona today for assessment on his fractured right hand.

Fastest Rider: Randy de Puniet
"It was another positive day for me and the team. We continued our development of the new bike and, at the end of the day, we lapped a race simulation with consistent and fast lap times. It was the first long run for me on this bike and I feel quite satisfied about it.

"There are still some aspects to improve, especially on qualifiers. I know that I can go faster with soft tyres so tomorrow we will test three rear soft tyres and the new front one with Michelin support. Unfortunately I suffered a small crash in the afternoon when I started my race simulation. I was unhurt in the incident and completed successfully my "to do" list."
