Dani Pedrosa has undergone surgery on the second metacarpal of his right hand, injured in a crash on day one of the Sepang test. The Spaniard returned home to Spain this morning, and was taken immediately to the Dexeus clinic in Barcelona for assessment by specialists. An operation on the injury was deemed necessary, and Pedrosa went under the knife at 2pm local time.

Dr. Xavier Mir, an expert in such procedures, pronounced the operation a success, and indicated that there were no complications.

Functional recovery will return in the next 72 hours, explained the experienced head of surgery. The timescale for a return to sporting action is unknown, because in such cases the capacity for recovery in elite sportsmen is surprising. The majority of cases require a minimum of six weeks.

Such a prolonged period of absence would rule Pedrosa out of further testing opportunities in Phillip Island, Sepang and the Official Test in Jerez. The Repsol Honda rider has called a press conference for tomorrow at 12.30pm local time.
