Hot on the heels of the opening MotoGP test of 2008 in Sepang, a selection of 125cc and 250cc riders were out on track in Jerez this Thursday for the beginning of this year's preparations for the coming season.

Lotus Aprilia rider Alex Debon, returning as a full-time rider this season with the departure of Jorge Lorenzo to MotoGP, was the fastest in the 250cc category with a lap of 1'44.069. Debon's unofficial time was under that of Alex de Angelis' circuit record of 1'44.295.

The Spaniard was closely followed by Thomas Luthi, also riding an Aprilia, whilst KTM representatives Mika Kallio and Hiroshi Aoyama took third and fourth on the timesheets for the Austrian factory. The top six was completed by Marco Simoncelli and Karel Abraham.

Making his debut for Blusens Aprilia, Northern Irish rider Eugene Laverty was adapting to a new machine in the quarter litre class, and will be looking to steadily improve his times. He finished the day 19th fastest, ahead of new team-mate Russell Gomez, who suffered a small crash, and behind Doni Tata Pradita, the Indonesian rookie riding a Yamaha.

In 125cc, World Champion Gabor Talmacsi had a storming start to his year with the number one plate adorning his Aspar Aprilia. The Hungarian picked up from where he left off in November at Jerez, with the fastest time of the day. On an upgraded Aprilia, Sandro Cortese was just over half a second slower than Talmacsi, who put himself into the top six alongside Mike di Meglio –on a factory Derbi- Polaris World's Bradley Smith, Sergio Gadea and Nico Terol.

Riding for the first time in a World Championship test, at a circuit with which he is familiar due to his involvement in the Spanish Championship, Briton Scott Redding was just over a second off Talmacsi's fastest time of the opening session. Testing for both categories continues on Friday and Saturday.
