Rossi: 'We are in good shape'

His 2008 preseason testing schedule strongly centred on Sepang, Fiat Yamaha's Valentino Rossi undertook his first three days of six in Malaysia this week.

Although the Italian's start to his program was postponed until the final test of last year, owing to a hand injury suffered before the race at Valencia, Rossi is showing no signs of struggling with a huge developmental schedule. The five-time MotoGP World Champion has been adapting to not only the Bridgestone tyres that he will use for the first time this coming season, but a pneumatic valve engine improved upon from its debut appearance at the Grand Prix of Japan in 2007.

Rossi was the sixth fastest rider over the course of the opening trio of testing sessions, recording his best time of 2'01.425 on a Bridgestone qualifier that the 28 year-old admits requires a more in-depth analysis.

"We have found some positive things here. We need to improve our performance with the qualifying tyre; we need more time to better understand how to set-up our bike with the soft tyres and so we will continue to work on this next time," noted a tired but content Rossi.

"The first test is always difficult, and Malaysia is always so hot which adds to this. We've had some new stuff from Yamaha, who have been working hard, and the first impression is positive. There's a lot of work still to do when we come back here in ten days time, but we are in good shape," said last season's third place finisher in the World Championship, who skips next week's test in Phillip Island and returns to action in Sepang on February 5th.
