Smith picks up the pace in 125cc Jerez visit

Heading the 125cc testing timesheets for the second time in as many days, Bradley Smith put in what is unofficially the fastest ever lap for a bike of its kind at Jerez.

Heading the 125cc testing timesheets for the second time in as many days, Bradley Smith put in what is unofficially the fastest ever lap for a bike of its kind at Jerez. The Oxfordshire rider's time of 1'46.869 was quicker than current circuit record holder Mattia Pasini's marker, and also made him the only participant at the test to go round in under 1'47.

Whilst results from this week can be rationalised as ‘merely testing', for Smith this represents an important progression and a statement of intent to Gabor Talmacsi, the 2007 World Champion who was second fastest today. Simone Corsi, Mike di Meglio, Sergio Gadea and Sandro Cortese completed the top six, with the latter three all riding improved machines to those with which they began the 2007 season.

It wasn't all good news for the Briton, however, as he suffered a light crash at the Spanish circuit although escaped unharmed. Not so fortunate was former team-mate Esteve Rabat, who fractured his left collarbone in an unrelated incident.
