Ducati Technical Coordinator compares rider fortunes

Reflecting on the contrasting fortunes of Ducati Marlboro riders Casey Stoner and Marco Melandri, Technical Coordinator Cristhian Pupulin is confident that both riders can still make further steps forward before the start of the season.

"Casey improved all the time on the third day, with small changes made to the bike making him faster and faster," noted Pupulin upon the conclusion of testing ‘Down Under'. The home rider was untouchable at the track where he won his ninth MotoGP race last year, nearly a second quicker than nearest rival Nicky Hayden.

"We tried a new qualifier and race tyre, and were finally able to try a long race simulation with Casey," added Pupulin, who then conceded that such joy had not been repeated with Melandri.

"Marco was not able to make the same improvement, unfortunately, although he started well. We tried a new configuration to try and address the feeling problem that he has been having, but maybe we went in the wrong direction and were unable to see him improve like Casey," said the man who doubles as Melandri's Chief Mechanic.

"However, we now have more confidence and understand better what Marco likes and doesn't like, so we will be able to do better in Jerez at the Official Test."
