Pesek unprepared after enforced layoff

250cc rookie Lukas Pesek has experienced a frustrating winter break, laid up with illness whilst his new quarter litre rivals undertook some intensive training schedules to improve fitness. The Czech rider has little time to get into shape for the 2008 season, and admits that he is not fully prepared for the challenge at the present time.

"The season is now! I can say that I am not ready yet; I spent a lot of time in bed with illness over the break," Pesek stated last week to motogp.com. "I started a little bit late in January so I am now trying to recover the lost time. I'm trying to do some laps, and hopefully the times will come."

Whilst some riders only made afternoon appearances at Valencia last week, owing to the early morning temperature drop, Pesek was one of the more assiduous of the packed 250cc field. Riding under the Auto Kelly – CP Aprilia banner, the former 125cc racewinner was the only representative from his new team's quarter litre line-up for the final day of testing, with ‘brother in arms' Thomas Luthi having suffered a fractured collarbone on day two. Pesek explained the curious arrangement of the new team, which sees the only difference between his and Luthi's team arising from sponsorship discrepancies.

"For me the team is new, also the mechanics are people with whom I haven't worked before. The structure means that I am in a team with Thomas Luthi, albeit with different sponsors. My support comes from the Czech Republic and it's nice to know that there are people there interested in me. I'll try to repay that with good results."

Luthi last week underwent surgery in his native Switzerland, with Dr. Marc Mettler treating the clean fracture at the Klinik Münsingen. The former 125cc World Champion now expects to return to riding at the Official Test in Jerez from February 19th.
