For Polaris World Aprilia rider Bradley Smith, the opening 125cc tests of 2008 have given a clear indication of what may lie ahead for the upcoming season. Recording some personal best times in Jerez and Valencia, the Briton has attracted the attention of some of his fellow lower cylinder class competitors eager to begin the early mind games. However, the resilient 17 year-old has emphasised that he will be backing down from no-one this year.

"I think that we'll see some aggressive battles this season. Everybody tries to make their mark at the first couple of tests, with barging and this, that and the other," said Smith, who was on the receiving end of some hard outbraking in Spain.

"Personally I'm going to give as good as I get; I won't be going crazy because it's only testing and I don't want to go fighting or anything! When we get to the races the serious business starts, and the elbows might have to come out. Let's just hope that we have some good racing, 125cc style," he added with diplomacy.

The Briton was the fastest rider on track in Jerez, and last week was only beaten by a spectacularly mercurial Sergio Gadea on the Valencia timesheets. That he clocked laps faster than those of the likes of 2007 World Champion Gabor Talmacsi, whilst riding a bike over which he only swung his leg at the end of last year, bodes exceptionally well for the Polaris World newcomer.

"Jerez was a great test. I'm just enjoying riding the bike; I've got power for once!" Smith told motogp.com in Valencia. "I wouldn't say that the chassis is that much different to the Honda (ridden by the Briton in 2006 & 2007), but you have the power to go down the straights. Everyone is working really hard to take this form into the season."
