The Phillip Island circuit has been a venue of specific interest for Rizla Suzuki during the 2007-08 winter testing period, with the team aiming to improve their performance at the Australian track on two separate recent visits.

In addition to last week's test with the majority of the MotoGP grid in attendance, Suzuki also visited ‘the Island' late in November while most of their competitors were working at Jerez before the winter testing ban.

The team have struggled to perform to their high standards on Australian soil on previous Grand Prix visits so local rider Chris Vermeulen and his experienced new team-mate Loris Capirossi have been happy to gather crucial data ‘Down Under', onboard a developing Suzuki GSV-R800 prototype.

Indeed, Vermeulen left his home circuit with a confidence boosting sixth fastest time on the timesheet (1'30.216), on Bridgestone qualifying tyres on the final day last week – a lap which was more than a second-and-a-half quicker than his qualifying effort for last year's GMC Australian Grand Prix.

Having also improved on the race tyre lap times he recorded in November's test at Phillip Island Vermeulen stated: "We've made some progress with the bike, with the tyres, and we're getting closer. This is the worst track for us, for Suzuki, so we've got plenty of things from Suzuki that we've tried."

"We came here in November to test and we learned a lot. Loris (Capirossi) and myself gave plenty of information to the team and they've built more fairings and cowlings to test and it's been good, very successful."

Looking ahead to his next pre-season session, at the MotoGP Official Test from 16th-18th February in Jerez where Rizla Suzuki will unveil their new 2008 livery for the first time, Vermeulen adds: "We now head to Spain for the next test with the season getting closer, we are still scratching our heads on a few things, but I am sure will make further steps in time for the start of the season."
