Rated as one of the favourites for the 250cc World Championship crown in his sophomore season, Alvaro Bautista took further steps towards his title challenge in testing last week at Valencia's Ricardo Tormo circuit.

The Spaniard will not be using a completely new machine for 2008, having already been given the prototype of the Aprilia RSA towards the end of last season. However, there is still plenty of work to be done as the Aspar rider prepares for the opening race of the year in Qatar.

"I'm basically using the same bike as at the end of last year. Aprilia have made a slightly different bike but the chassis and suspension etc are all the same. We're trying to improve the RSA, which I think was a good base, and work to be at our best for the season," said Bautista in a break from putting in laps at the Spanish circuit.

"If I were to put my faith in who's doing the fastest times at the moment, then I think that we'd be seeing loads of riders fighting for the title! I think that things will change when we get to the races; the KTMs look pretty strong, having finished well last year, and the Aprilia riders with RSA machines are also looking strong. People like Hector Barbera and Alex Debon –who developed the bike practically from the start- will be up there," added the former 125cc World Champion, who also cast his eye over the new arrivals from the class that he dominated in 2006.

"The new arrivals from 125cc will be the surprise package; we don't know who will do what out of the rookies. We're just looking forward to getting back riding."
