Gilera launch 2008 package at Monza

The famous Italian racetrack of Monza was the venue for Gilera's official 2008 World Championship launch presentation on Monday.

The event had a distinctly Italian flavour as the famous brand officially unveiled their package for the forthcoming season, with Metis Gilera pair Roberto Locatelli and Marco Simoncelli in attendance, alongside new Campetella Racing duo Fabrizio Lai and Manuel Poggiali.

"The presence four Gilera riders in the 250cc World Championship demonstrates the commitment of the Piaggio Group to putting the brand in motorcycling's best shop window. We make no secret of our ambitions this year, with four strong riders we hope to continue the tradition of winning races."

Locatelli, the former 125cc rider who of course suffered horrendous injuries in a horror crash at Jerez early last year, has once again been under the surgeon's knife recently to add a supporting plate to his ankle and was in a buoyant mood at the launch.

The Italian veteran commented: "The 2007 season was hard for me. My work was obviously affected by the accident, even though I was back riding within 55 days due to my own effort. I now feel that the Roberto Locatelli who everyone knows is back and I am ready to make more of a contribution again, using the experience I have to get the results this brand deserves."
