Kallio tops 250cc timesheet on day one at Jerez

Red Bull KTM's Mika Kallio was the fastest 250cc rider at Jerez on the opening day of this week's test at Jerez de la Frontera, the 25 year old Finn leading the way with a time of 1'46.369 - on the last of his 12 laps of the Spanish circuit.

Red Bull KTM's Mika Kallio was the fastest 250cc rider at Jerez on the opening day of this week's test at Jerez de la Frontera, the 25 year old Finn leading the way with a time of 1'46.369 - on the last of his 12 laps of the Spanish circuit.

In an afternoon session exclusive to the 250cc category - the quarter litre class participants had shared the track with their 125cc counterparts in the morning – Kallio was amongst several riders able to run on slick tyres with the track drying out as the day progressed.

However, only 17 of the 23 250cc riders present took part in the afternoon outing, with many only putting in around a dozen laps.

Marco Simoncelli of Metis Gilera was second quickest with a lap just over half a second slower than Kallio's, while the Finnish pace-setter's team-mate Hiroshi Aoyama was third fastest.

KTM appear to have the measure of Jerez - having performed well at the Andalucian venue on the last day of January's 250cc test visit – and they had a third rider in today's top five with Repsol KTM's Julian Simon lapping less than a second behind Kallio. The sharpest Aprilia rider, meanwhile, was Alvaro Bautista who ended up fifth on the timesheet.

The riders continue with the second of three scheduled test days tomorrow, though with more rain forecast their activity may be similarly limited on Wednesday.
