Cecchinello believes tyres key to De Puniet success

A new engine from Honda –used for the first time by the Japanese factory's satellite riders in Jerez last weekend- may have given a boost to LCR Honda rider Randy de Puniet, but Team Manager Lucio Cecchinello maintains that tyres will once again be the deciding factor in 2008 MotoGP success.

De Puniet put in some of the fastest race tyre times on the first day of practice in Spain, building on previous eye-catching performances in preseason. Cecchinello has been pleased with the Frenchman's work with the Honda RC212V, stating that with everything in its right place a battle for rostrum finishes could be on the cards.

"We're happy to see Randy doing fast times and looking relaxed. It's difficult to say what more he needs. For sure, the tyres will make the difference this year. It will be important to get the best support possible from Michelin, and if we don't have any problems with tyres then we can fight for the podium," said Cecchinello, whose MotoGP outfit have appeared once before on the rostrum courtesy of Casey Stoner at the 2006 visit to Turkey. De Puniet has one podium to his name, a second place in a wet race in Japan last year.

Cecchinello had been one of the Team Managers awaiting the new Honda engine, and was not disappointed by the improvements made.

"It was a nice surprise to see such good performance from the new engine. Honda worked very hard and have definitely given us a better engine in comparison with last year," noted the former 125cc and 250cc rider.

"As requested, the new motor is much stronger at high revolutions; there's better acceleration. What's more, they've kept the power at a low RPM. We're very happy."

De Puniet and the LCR Honda team now prepare for a final test in Qatar, the scene of the opening race of the season on March 9th.
