The MotoGP Official Test in Qatar is already underway at the Losail International Circuit, with the impressive new lighting system having been formally switched on just before the premier class riders took to the track.

Representatives from the FIM, the QMMF (Qatar's motorcycle federation) and sponsors of the Qatari race Commercialbank, were present for the historic moment, opening the proceedings at the first 800cc night test.

It was then the turn of the MotoGP competitors to try out the floodlights for themselves, beginning their preparations for the March 9th race in earnest with the first of two nights of testing.

Reigning World Champion Casey Stoner, the poleman in 2006 and last year's race winner, showed no problem in the opening hour of the session, clocking a time of 1'55.368 after just 14 laps of night riding. The Australian's blistering early hot lap was just three tenths slower than Valentino Rossi's pole record, and already quicker than the 22 year-old's own record fastest race lap.

After a start an hour later than scheduled, the opening night of testing in Qatar has been extended until 1am local time (GMT+3).
