Pasini lays down marker in second 250cc night test

Back for an encore after a successful opening night of testing in Qatar, the stars of the 250cc category returned to action for the second of three nocturnal tests in preparation for next weeks Commercialbank Grand Prix of Qatar.

Back for an encore after a successful opening night of testing in Qatar, the stars of the 250cc category returned to action for the second of three nocturnal tests in preparation for next weeks Commercialbank Grand Prix of Qatar. Once again the sessions were split between those run only by the quarter litre class and those undertaken in conjunction with their 125cc counterparts.

A recent graduate from the smallest of the two cylinder categories, Mattia Pasini showed why he is tipped for success in 250cc by recording the fastest two-stroke night lap to date of the Losail International Circuit. The Polaris World rider laid down an unequalled marker of 159.761 in the segregated second session, a respectable three tenths of a second slower than Jorge Lorenzos pole position time clocked in considerably warmer temperatures in 2007.

Also recording his fastest time in the 250cc-only session was Alvaro Bautista, yesterdays fastest rider in the class. The Spaniard had headed the timesheet in the opening session of night two, and lowered his time by four tenths of a second thereafter, but was eventually some eight tenths slower than Pasinis trailblazing lap. Bautista did not reappear for the final session of the night, getting some rest ahead of tomorrows preseason-concluding event.

Once again, the classification showed a tilt towards those using Aprilia machinery, with the factory-supported duo of Lotus Aprilias Alex Debon and Pepe Team Toths Hector Barbera both riding within a second of Pasinis time. Barbera also elected against a final outing in the last combined session of the night.

Mika Kallio would have been forgiven for not having slept much when proceedings drew to a close on Saturday night, outside the top ten in a rare occurrence for the Finn. The Red Bull KTM rider bounced back on the second night, with both he and team-mate Hiroshi Aoyama completing the top six with similar times.

Thomas Luthi, Aleix Espargaro, Karel Abraham and Manuel Poggiali joined the aforementioned six in the top ten, in which there was no place for the Metis Gilera duo of Marco Simoncelli and Roberto Locatelli. The Italian duo didnt quite replicate their success from the first night sessions, and Locatelli in particular struggled in the early going with two crashes in the combined session. The former 125cc World Champion did, however, take to the track again during the 250cc-exclusive hour.

A final night of testing, and indeed of the 250cc class preseason, takes place on Monday night.
