Advantage Barbera as 250cc preseason concludes in Qatar

Team Toth's Hector Barbera was the fastest 250cc rider on the third and final evening of night testing at Qatar as the quarter litre class 2008 preseason schedule concluded with a strong showing from the leading Aprilia riders.

Barbera's best effort of 2'00.163 was his own best time of the three night Qatar visit and put him at the head of a combined timesheet from the three respective 250cc Monday sessions.

Fellow Aprilia RSA-equipped riders Thomas Luthi (Emmi-Caffe Latte), Alvaro Bautista (Mapfre Aspar Team) and Alex Debon (Lotus Aprilia) also featured in Monday's top four, while Red Bull KTM 250 pair Hiroshi Aoyama and Mika Kallio were fifth and sixth respectively.

As was the case on Saturday and Sunday the evening's activities got underway with a combined 250cc & 125cc session starting at 5pm local time, followed by a single cylinder only session at 8pm and a quarter litre class only outing at 9.10pm. The last opportunity to make final tweaks came in another combined run from 10.40pm-midnight, in the last smaller class test session of a preseason programme which has also included two visits to Jerez and a trip to Valencia since Christmas, in addition to the floodlit special at Losail.

In seventh place overall on Monday was Roberto Locatelli (Metis Gilera), as he continued his rehabilitation from further recent surgery, the Italian lapping just quicker than compatriot Mattia Pasini of Polaris World. Pasini's best time on the final evening was 2'00.954 as he was unable to match his own best time from Sunday – the 1'59.761 lap which made him the fastest two-stroke participant of the whole weekend and the only rider to break the 2'00 barrier.

Meanwhile, the Monday top ten was rounded off by Julian Simon (Repsol KTM) and Karel Abraham (Cardion AB Motoracing), who both went round within a second of Barbera's best time.

The 250cc riders will return to the Losail track as of 8.15pm local time on Friday for their first free practice session of the Commercialbanl Grand Prix of Qatar weekend, full coverage of which will be featured on motogp.com.
